South African actress Thuso Mbedu turned heads at New York Comic Con, stepping in front of cameras to discuss the intense physical preparation behind her role in the highly anticipated film Children of Blood and Bone. Dressed sharply and glowing against the event's step-and-repeat backdrop, she gave fans a candid glimpse into just how far she pushed herself for the part.

Bow staffs and TSA drama

Mbedu, who previously wielded a machete in The Woman King, described the bow staff as an entirely new challenge. Working closely with stance coordinator Danny Hernandez, she learnt a fight style that blends Wushu, Capoeira, and other African-inspired martial disciplines into what she called "a choreographical language" specific to her character.

The training was no casual affair. She committed to five days a week, with each session opening with 90 minutes of conditioning before driving to a separate location for further drills. To keep up the practice while travelling internationally, she sourced a portable staff compact enough to clear airport security, though she joked that the process was not always straightforward. She said with a laugh.
