Veneers are quite an expensive luxury; ordinary people opt for something more budget-friendly, like braces. A lot of South Africans have braces, whether it’s to hop on the “trend” or to achieve a more desirable and socially accepted smile.

People often ask about the cost and waiting period regarding the procedure, and not the life-changing experience one would inevitably go through. A youngster on TikTok, Reotshephile Selete, explained her frustrations online.

She explained that the procedure is painful and uncomfortable. One has to learn how to maintain their oral health.

Selete shared that for three days after the procedure, one will find it difficult to eat solid foods. They have to consume soft foods like soup, yoghurt, and ice cream:

“You are going to go on a diet. There are certain foods that you are not allowed to eat when you have braces because they are going to break your brackets.”

She thoroughly explained that one should prepare the day before the procedure by moisturising their lips. The youngster said that the braces mess up the lining of her mouth to which she needs to use a particular wax for.

Selete highlighted that one of the most difficult things was closing her mouth:

“We go through a lot. If you encounter someone who has braces, give them a kiss (with their permission!). I've had braces for two years and seven months now. Don't get me wrong, they do the job, but at what cost?”
