On Sunday, 7 September, 2025, South Africans will get the opportunity to see a blood moon during a total lunar eclipse. But what is the best time to witness the event?

The Weather Girls, a duo of content creators who share weather information, posted on their TikTok account an explanation of what exactly a total lunar eclipse is. One of the women explained that this happens when the Earth aligns perfectly between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow on the moon.

"Instead of disappearing, the moon glows deep red. But why? The Earth's atmosphere scatters the blue light and only lets the reds and oranges reach the moon. This is also why it's called a blood moon."

"Guys, please note that there's nothing like a lunar eclipse allowance, and you don't have to buy your woman a gift, flowers, or even a chocolate for this event. Don't let the ladies convince you otherwise. However, if you are hopeless romantics, you can go ahead and spoil your queens, but please, do it secretly so that other ladies out there don't know about it."

@callmentosh, who seemed to be based in Cape Town, added in the comment section:

"I want to go to Signal Hill to have an even better view."

@urgal.tee humorously said to people on the internet:

"Just beware of the werewolves."
