An old video of Charlie Kirk, an American political activist and author, stating that he wouldn't want to make South Africa his home resurfaced on the internet, sparking division among social media users.
Nash Seoke, a South African content creator, shared a snippet of Charlie's interview with Tucker Carlson, an American conservative political commentator and host, on his TikTok account. During the May, 2025 interview, he compared America's "immigrant emergency" to life in South Africa.
Charlie stated in the clip:
"I don't want to live in that country. I don't want to live in South Africa. I don't want to live in resentment or bitterness, where I have to drive around in armoured cars all the time, and I can't leave my house after 10pm."

Who was Charlie Kirk?
A right-wing activist and one of Trump's greatest allies, Charlie was the co-founder of the conservative organisation Turning Point USA, which he established at 18. According to the BBC, he regularly debated students on topics like faith, politics, climate change, and family values.
His comments on the above were divisive, particularly his stance on gender and race.
According to The Guardian, the Make America Great Again (MAGA) supporter once said:
"If I'm dealing with somebody in customer service who's a moronic Black woman, I wonder if she's there because of her excellence, or is she there because of affirmative action?"

Charlie Kirk divides South Africans
Despite Charlie's views on South Africa, hundreds of social media users still showed him love and honoured his legacy. On the other hand, some online users criticised the controversial figure.
@user8475172338000, with much sarcasm, said:
"He didn't want to be killed after 10pm. God answered, and he was killed before 10pm in broad daylight in a safe country."
@isaia.ndobe wrote in the comment section:
"Death is everywhere, but no one deserves to die in that way. He's got a wife and children. May his soul rest well."
@beneth.hlungwane shared their opinion of the country:
"South Africa is very dangerous. We can't even buy our dream cars because they can be taken away at any time."
@sira_7902 filled their comment with laughing emojis, writing:
"Let me laugh as a South African. I'm on my way home now, 11.45pm, walking free without any problem."
@user9410084212492 added under the post:
"Being born here in beautiful Mzansi, I can safely say I drive everywhere in the country any hour of the day, and take precautions like anyone else in any country. Never been shot at all my life, let alone being shot at and killed live on TV."
Referring to what Trump said about South Africa after being misinformed that there was a white genocide, @saml1696 commented:
"Terrible things are happening in America!"
