The Central University of Technology's Welkom Campus is in mourning after the death of one of its students. The Student Representative Council announced on 8 August 2026 that Rethabile Bokopane, a fourth-year Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase student, had passed away.

The SRC shared the news in a formal communiqué addressed to the student body, saying her passing had left a void in the hearts of classmates, lecturers, and all who had known her. The council extended condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones on behalf of the entire CUT community.
A memorial service will be held on 12 August 2026, at Venue A3 on the CUT Welkom Campus, running from 12:30 to 15:30. Her burial took place on Saturday, 15 August 2026, in Hlohlolwane, Clocolan, in the Free State. Read the SRC's official announcement on Facebook:
