A private emergency services company became the unlikely heroes of a brutal South African cold snap. Berg Protection Services Drakensberg shared a video on Facebook on 10 August 2026 showing their team delivering hot coffee, food and blankets to truck drivers stranded in heavy snowfall on the R617 between Underberg and Swartberg, near the Kingscote Pass.
A team member filmed the clip from the roadside, explaining that drivers had been completely trapped in their vehicles and were likely to spend the night stuck on the snowy road.
“The guys are snowed in. They trapped in their vehicles. So we thought from Berg Protection Services side, we’ll bring them a couple of hot coffees and something to eat,” he said.
He also urged the public to avoid the roads entirely.

South Africa’s snow grips the Drakensberg
South Africa has been in the grip of a widespread cold front in recent days, with the Drakensberg and parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape experiencing significant snowfall. Mountain passes have been closed, and authorities have repeatedly warned motorists against travelling in affected areas.
The R617, which winds through high-altitude terrain between Underberg and Kokstad, was among the badly affected routes, leaving heavy goods vehicles with no option but to stop and wait out the conditions.
Berg Protection Services describes itself as an emergency service provider offering medical response, armed response, guarding and alarm services in the region. Their decision to venture out into those conditions specifically to bring comfort to stranded strangers struck a deep chord with South Africans watching online.
