KWAZULU-NATAL — Two people have been killed following a single vehicle accident on the R617, just past Mpophomeni near Howick in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

The incident, which happened on 10 August 2026, is believed to have been caused by adverse weather conditions. Midlands Emergency Medical Services Howick crews were dispatched to the scene following reports of the motor vehicle accident, and on arrival, discovered that both occupants had been ejected from the vehicle during the crash. After assessment, medical staff declared both individuals deceased at the scene.

Sleet and snow recorded at crash site

While the cause of the crash is not yet known, emergency services did note signs of sleet and snow in the area at the time of the incident. Reduced visibility and potentially icy road surfaces are believed to have contributed to the conditions leading up to the crash. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation by the relevant authorities.

Motorists urged to delay travel

In response to the deteriorating weather across the region, the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) activated its Snowfall Response Plan. Several roads in Kokstad, Kingscot, and Underberg were closed as a precaution. The R617 itself was subsequently shut to traffic, with motorists redirected to the R56. The RTI also reported that one truck became stuck on the R617 near Kingscot.

Authorities and emergency services issued a public safety advisory, urging drivers to reduce speed, increase following distance, switch on headlights, and avoid sudden braking or sharp steering when travelling in wet or icy conditions. Members of the public were also encouraged to remain indoors where possible and allow extra time when travel was unavoidable.

The RTI called on motorists and so-called snow chasers, those travelling specifically to witness snowfall in the Midlands and surrounding areas, to delay their trips until conditions improved.
