An audio recording of a man believed to be Chidimma Adetshina's father resurfaced online on 25 August 2026, where he broke his silence on the citizenship controversy surrounding his family. In it, he laid out the timeline of how he and his wife came to settle in South Africa - and the answers may surprise many who have followed the case.
The man revealed that he and his wife, whom he describes as a South African, originally met in the United Kingdom. Their first time setting foot on South African soil was in 2010, when they travelled to watch the FIFA World Cup as visitors.
"I met my wife in the UK; she is a South African like me. In 2010, during the World Cup, we decided to visit South Africa to watch the World Cup. At that time, we didn't have kids."
How the Adetshinashas settled in South Africa
Chidimma's apparent father confirmed that they entered the country on visitor's visas, stayed for the duration of the tournament and returned to the UK approximately two weeks later. He subsequently came back to South Africa on another visitor's visa, where he and his wife got married.

Chidimma Adetshina's deportation battle continues
The recording emerged at a particularly charged moment in Chidimma's legal fight. The former Miss South Africa finalist and Miss Universe Nigeria runner-up has launched a High Court application challenging the Department of Home Affairs' decision to withdraw her South African identity document and revoke her citizenship.
She is also fighting to prevent Home Affairs from having her and her minor son detained ahead of a potential deportation to Nigeria, maintaining that she was born in South Africa and deserves the opportunity to regularise her legal status.
The Cape Town Regional Court recently postponed its final ruling on the state's detention application to 27 February 2027, while her High Court challenge remains ongoing.
Speaking outside court after the postponement, Chidimma called for fairness and suggested she was being singled out. She urged the public not to allow xenophobia and misinformation to override the rule of law.
