A Johannesburg woman was left shaken after taxi marshals blocked her car in Katlehong on 31 August 2026 and forced her colleagues out of her vehicle, claiming she was stealing business from local minibus taxis.

The incident was captured on video and posted to TikTok by [@newsnexussa](https://www.tiktok.com/@newsnexussa/video/7680097374538140949), where it quickly spread across social media and sparked public outrage.

In the footage, the driver can be heard calmly explaining that the passengers in her car were her co-workers, people she was giving a lift to work. The explanation made no difference. A marshal in a bright high-visibility jacket insisted she had no right to carry anyone in her personal vehicle, arguing that private lifts cut into the income of local taxi operators.

Taxi Marshals Overstep Their Authority

No law in South Africa prohibits a private motorist from offering a lift to friends, family or colleagues. Taxi marshals have no legal authority to stop private vehicles or remove passengers, yet incidents like this one have become a familiar grievance for many South Africans.
