The scene was tense and disorganised, with the police presence doing little to immediately calm the situation. One young man could be seen behaving disrespectfully towards an officer, drawing further attention online.
Spring Day, celebrated on 1 September each year, has long been marked by students dousing each other with water. But the celebrations often spill over into the days that follow, and the consequences can be serious. Viewers were quick to point out that the timing was particularly concerning, given that many matric learners are currently sitting their preliminary examinations in preparation for the National Senior Certificate.
