South African media personality and actor Siv Ngesi is being praised after publicly offering to fund the replacement of hearing aids belonging to a deaf matric student whose devices were destroyed during Spring Day celebrations.

The Grade 12 learner, based in Tzaneen, Limpopo, was splashed with water by a group of Spring Day revellers, which damaged both her hearing aids. Without the devices, the student is unable to hear at all. Her family confirmed she has already been absent from school while her classmates continue preparing for their matric exams. Getting the hearing aids replaced privately is estimated to cost around R8,000, and the family is also weighing up whether to pursue legal action over the incident.

When the story of the Tzaneen student surfaced on Instagram via the verified account of Newsroom South Africa, Ngesi responded on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, 4 September 2026, with a simple but powerful message: "I'll pay for it …. Connect me to them."

The offer quickly spread across social media, drawing an outpouring of support from South Africans who were moved by the gesture.
