Spring Day took a dark turn this year, and some of South Afica's biggest names have had enough. A video filmed on 1 September 2026 in ekasi captured a chaotic street-level gathering where youngsters were seen splashing water on adults during the annual spring celebrations, and the footage quickly spread across social media.

What was once a harmless childhood tradition, where kids would spray one another with water to welcome the new season, has steadily drawn in older participants and, with that shift, a wave of disturbing incidents. One widely circulated image showed a soaked elderly man on his bicycle after celebrations turned hostile towards older people in his area. Elsewhere, a young man lost his life after being stabbed amid the festivities.

Celebrities Call Out Spring Day Behaviour

The viral footage prompted sharp reactions from several prominent South African public figures, including Prince Kaybee, Nandi Madida and Zola Hashatsi, all of whom condemned what they described as a dangerous lack of respect for adults.

Hashatsi was particularly blunt. "I watched those Spring Day videos, and you guys are raising animals. Kak human beings who have no respect for adults," he said.

**Mzansi Divided Over the Tradition**

Not everyone agreed with the celebrities' outrage. Responses from ordinary South Africans on X reflected just how split public opinion is on the matter.
