A Durban chef has been celebrated as a community hero after putting his life on the line to save an elderly woman from a burning restaurant. Ayakha Godlwana received a bravery award from the KZN International Business Association (KIBA) on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, days after racing into the blaze at Delfi Greek Taverna to pull a 74-year-old woman to safety.

KIBA president Omie Singh presented Godlwana with the award at a morning ceremony, Berea Mail shared on Facebook. Among those who attended was Doddy Teranes, one of the owners of Delfi Greek Taverna, whose mother was the woman Ayakha rescued during the restaurant fire on 3 September 2026.
The chef did not hesitate when flames tore through the restaurant. He entered the burning building and brought the elderly woman out safely, an act those present described as extraordinarily selfless. The recognition by KIBA came as a response to his courageous actions that day.
