"Africa Is the Truth": American’s Reaction to New World Map Has the Internet Talking

An American Instagram user sparked a wave of shock and disbelief after posting a video breaking down what the newly backed world map means for everything people thought they knew about the size of continents.

The video, posted by @woobaby1_ on Instagram, centres on a graphic comparing the Mercator projection, which has been the world’s standard map for roughly 500 years, with the Equal Earth projection, recently backed by the United Nations as a more accurate alternative. The difference is staggering. In the Mercator version, Greenland appears nearly as large as Africa. In reality, Africa dwarfs it entirely.

The creator, Alizè, narrated her reaction with pure disbelief:

“I never thought China and the U.S. could fit in Africa at the same time with a lot of room left at that.”

Why Africa changes everything

Africa’s distortion in the Mercator projection has long been noted by cartographers and scholars. The Equal Earth projection, developed by geographers Bojan Šavrič, Tom Patterson and Bernhard Jenny, was designed specifically to represent landmasses at their correct relative sizes. Under this model, Africa emerges as by far the largest continent on Earth.

What sent Alizè’s video into overdrive was her point about the United States being the only country to vote against adopting the new map standard.

“America was the only country to vote no,” she said, connecting that decision to NASA and satellite imagery. “If they be lying, then that makes them out to be the owners of the lie.” The post racked up 3,509 comments and 7,023 shares.
