A South African home cook just proved that boerewors belongs in a wok. Popular food creator Wayne Chang posted a recipe video on 5 October 2026 that quickly caught the attention of food lovers across Mzansi, blending the beloved local braai staple with Asian fried rice techniques.

The clip, filmed in a home kitchen, shows Wayne cooking the boerewors two ways: half left intact to stay juicy, and the other half with the casing removed and cooked down like mince. Both portions are rendered until browned and crispy before being combined with diced onions, spring onions, garlic, white pepper, Aromat, Worcestershire sauce, and day-old rice.

Why day-old rice makes the difference

Wayne is particular about one thing: the rice. He stressed that using day-old rice is essential to getting the texture right, a common technique in Asian cooking that prevents the grains from turning mushy in the wok. The result is a dish with two distinct textures and flavour profiles from the boerewors merging into one plate.

After tasting it on camera, Wayne admitted he was genuinely surprised by how well it worked. He said he would add chillies next time but otherwise called it:

"surprisingly good."
