A couple looking to experience a part of South Africa took a five-day and four-night vacation to Durban. They noted that the trip was very affordable, which intrigued a few locals.

TikTok user Neo uploaded a series of pictures to her TikTok account on 17 August, 2025 to show app users what she and her girlfriend got up to in the KwaZulu-Natal city and what it cost them.

The traveller, who used South African Airways to travel from Johannesburg to Durban, shared that return tickets for two people were R4 000, while accommodation at Belaire Suites Hotel, including a breakfast buffet, was R4 300.

The couple also used a rickshaw (R200) to go to uShaka Marine World, which cost them R195 per person. There, the duo went ziplining for R120 per person and grabbed some food, which came to R400.

Other activities included a bus tour (R110 per person), experiencing Florida Road (around R400), taking a boat cruise (around R200), sailing in a gondola (around R200), and going to the carnival (around R300).

The total in the post was R10 850, but Neo said it was approximately R11 000 because she didn't include e-hailing costs.

Neo, who booked her accommodation on Booking.com, advised people in the caption of her post:

"I would rather say start with Durban, then Cape Town, not like us. We couldn’t stop comparing, but it was beautiful. The good thing is it’s extremely cheap."

In a separate post, Neo shared that she and her girlfriend spent more than R25 000 on their trip to the Mother City, which she found was worth it.

Durban trip costs surprise Mzansi

Local members of the online community were quite intrigued when they calculated what the couple had spent on their trip to Durban.

Referring to the flight costs, @user7814391213614 humorously asked:

"R4 000 return. Haibo, was this in 1995?"

@odirile.m.tlhapi wrote in the comment section:

"How and where did you book the bus tour?"

Neo replied to the TikTok user:

"We paid on arrival, but please get there one hour before. There are two trips at 9am and 1pm."

@lynett_milli shared their thoughts, writing:

"Durban is cheap, though. Why so much spent vele?"

The traveller responded to the app user:

"It depends on the individuals, mntase. We love spending because we planned in advance for our vacations."

@zeeemavundleni stated with a laugh:

"The problem is that I went to Cape Town first, now I feel like no province can top that, but I also want to visit other places."

@bonga45 added in the comments:

"No, this was cheaper and better than mine. I was alone and spent almost R15 000. The worst cost was the Uber from Ballito to all these places. It frustrated me so much. Otherwise, I had fun, and I’d do it again."
