A South African woman living in Atlanta got the rudest, funniest awakening during a Saturday grocery run, and the internet has not stopped laughing since.

Tami McQueen, who goes by @tamimcqueen on Instagram, shared the clip on 4 October 2026. It begins as a casual selfie-style video from inside a moving car, with her US hubby narrating their day trip to pick up droëwors and biltong from their shop before heading to the grocery store for braai supplies. He cheekily calls Tami, the sleeping passenger, "Princess Liewe Heksie," a nod to the iconic South African children's character, as she dozes in the passenger seat.

Then things take a turn. Once they pull up at the grocery store, her husband grabs a piece of droëwors, cranks up Kurt Darren's beloved Afrikaans anthem "Kaptein (Span Die Seile)" at full volume, and belts it out using the droëwors as a microphone. His wife jolts awake, startled and confused, before dissolving into laughter at the scene unfolding beside her.

Kurt Darren's iconic Afrikaans anthem

"Kaptein (Span Die Seile)" has been a fixture of South African culture since its release on 3 March 2008, part of Kurt Darren's album Uit die diepte van my hart. The song is a staple at sokkies, sports stadiums, and festivals across the country, with its chorus about setting sail to find love becoming one of the most recognised sing-alongs in Afrikaans pop history.

Liewe Heksie Lives On in Atlanta

The Liewe Heksie reference in the video charmed South Africans who grew up with the character. Originally created in 1961 by author and radio personality Verna Vels, Liewe Heksie is a sweet but clumsy little witch from Blommeland who has been part of South African childhood through radio, books, and an SABC puppet series that ran from 1978 to 1982.
