- The acting public protector closes an investigation into President Cyril Ramaphosa that he had knowledge that state funds were being misused
- The allegation was brought forth by an ANC member of parliament after audio tapes leaked with Ramaphosa discussing the matter
- South Africans react to hearing that the president didn't violate any codes of ethics as accused
JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has been cleared by the Public Protector's office of any awareness that the African National Congress (ANC) was misusing state funds.
Mervyn Dirks, an ANC Member of Parliament, lodged a complaint against the president, citing a violation of the ethics code. He accused Ramaposa of failing to cooperate with all relevant authorities by providing evidence and information regarding the ANC misusing state funds, EWN reported.
According to Times Live Dirks accused Ramaphosa earlier year after audio tapes were leaked where the president can be heard saying that he knows that the ANC is using state funds for political campaigns. Kholeka Gcaleka said:
"Evidence obtained indicates that prior to the president making these utterances, it was widely reported, even in the Zondo Commission, which was public, on the misuse of public funds by the ruling party for party political gains."
South Africans commented on the ruling from the Public Protector:
@MalesaJohnny mentioned:
"Cyril will forever be 'clean' in the eyes of the captured Kholeka. I wonder why she must be called 'public protector' because she protects only Cyril and not the public."
@llutladi said:
"Ramaphosa is currently in charge of the office of the PP, he has his own people now, and he will be cleared even on Phalaphala. Adv Mkhwebane must come back."
@Mthuli4 stated:
"It doesn't matter. Whatever she said wouldn't have made any difference. Cyril is above the law."
