FlySafair Assures Travelers Flights Will Continue Despite Licensing Council Ruling

South Africans can continue booking flights with confidence as FlySafair confirms there will be no disruptions to its operations following a ruling by the Air Services Licensing Council (ASLC).

The ruling, which stems from a technical interpretation of airline ownership laws, requires FlySafair to make adjustments to its voting rights structure within 12 months. However, the airline has reassured passengers that this regulatory process will have no impact on flights or day-to-day operations.

FlySafair Responds to Licensing Council Decision

The ASLC’s decision follows a complaint lodged by rival airline Lift, challenging whether FlySafair meets South Africa’s 75% local ownership rule. While FlySafair maintains that its ownership structure complies with the law—with 50% of its voting rights in a South African trust—the council ruled that these rights must be held by natural persons, not corporate entities.

Despite this ruling, FlySafair remains fully licensed and operational while it assesses its options, which include adjusting its ownership model or challenging the interpretation through legal channels.

FlySafair’s Chief Marketing Officer, Kirby Gordon, welcomed the clarity that the airline has time to resolve the issue:

“At this stage, we are pleased that there is no threat to our ability to operate and that we can continue to focus our attention on our customers. Customers can continue booking and flying with confidence, knowing that FlySafair remains fully operational while we address this matter.”

What This Means for South African Travelers

For passengers, this means that nothing changes—all flights will operate as scheduled, and the airline remains in full compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.

As the aviation sector navigates this new interpretation of the law, all eyes will be on how FlySafair and other airlines adapt in the months ahead.
