How must the donation be used?

Mkhwanazi proposed to Chris Excel and the donors that the money be deposited into the South African Police Educational Trust, which is a fund that pays for the educational needs of the children of police officers who died in the line of duty.

"The majority of these members died at a young age and in junior ranks and have therefore not contributed that much in terms of their pension, leaving behind children who need support from us. The South African Police Educational Trust Fund takes care of these children by contributing to their educational needs," he said.

He called on members of the public to donate to the fund to support the children of officers who re killed while serving

Why did Mkhwanazi receive a donation?

Mkhwanazi received a donation after he held a press briefing on 6 July 2025 in which he implicated Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner General Shadrack Sibiya of interfering with the police's work. He alleged that they are part of a drug syndicate that involves members of the judiciary, police officers, politicians, government officials, and business people.

Following his revelations, President Cyril Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on a special leave of absence. He also established a commission of inquiry to investigate the allegations Mkhwanazi made.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola also placed Sibiya on leave of absence. Sibiya welcomed the investigation and said that he was not involved in a criminal syndicate.
