What did Shivambu say?

Shivambu officially launched the party on Friday, 5 September 2025, after months of touring the country to gain public support for a new political movement. But the unveiling of its logo quickly drew attention, with observers noting similarities to the EFF emblem and questioning its originality.

Shivambu strongly rejected claims that his new logo was copied from the EFF, saying that the two designs are not alike. He argued that anyone comparing the two would see clear differences. He said that having conceptualised the EFF logo himself, he was well aware of the distinction between that emblem and his new one.

Looking at the logo

The Afrika Mayibuye logo features a star above a purple circle, which encloses a red and green banner. From the southern tip of Africa, a black fist holding a spear-pen rises.

Shivambu said that both the EFF and Mayibuye logos depict a fist and spear but maintained that they are not identical. He pointed out differences in the angle of the fists, the placement of the star, and the direction of the spear. He further said that the spear also appears in the uMkhonto weSizwe Party’s emblem.

According to the party’s manifesto, the spear-pen symbolises the union of intellectual struggle and revolutionary action, while the purple circle represents royalty.

Symbolise the struggle

The fist and the outline of the African continent are intended to symbolise the struggle for full African emancipation and freedom. The party’s name, Afrika Mayibuye, draws from a historic liberation slogan meaning “May Africa return” or “Come back Africa.”
