SOUTH AFRICA - A Mpumalanga woman survived a poisoning attempt one day before she was raped and murdered, allegedly at the hands of her own daughter.
Wanter Dlamini, 62, was found dead on a railway track in Barberton. Her death is now at the centre of a murder trial at the Mbombela High Court.
Daughter's accused of plotting murder
Dlamini's daughter, Bathabile Mthunywa, 39, along with their neighbour Nombuso Ndwandwa, 41, and Steen Mahakeng, 36, are facing charges of rape and murder. Mahakeng is Mthunywa's boyfriend. He entered into an agreement with the state and is currently serving a 20-year sentence.

The court heard that someone placed insect poison into Dlamini's drink in the days before her death. However, Dlamini noticed something was wrong when she poured the beer into a glass and saw that it had changed colour. She chose not to drink it. Police later recovered the drink from her fridge, and laboratory analysis confirmed that the beer contained poison typically used to kill insects.
Mother warned not to drink the beer
Dlamini's other daughter testified that her mother had confided in her about the suspicious drink and the colour change. She told her not to drink it. That same daughter later alerted police to the beer incident after Dlamini went to the home where Mthunywa lived with Mahakeng and was never seen alive again.
Forensic evidence from the SAPS national laboratory confirmed that Dlamini had been raped before she was killed.
The state alleged that Ndwandwa had taken out a R40,000 funeral insurance policy in Dlamini's name. Prosecutors contend that Ndwandwa worked with Mthunywa and Mahakeng to kill the 62-year-old in order to claim the payout. The trial is continuing at the Mbombela High Court.
