WESTERN CAPE - Gayton McKenzie has claimed that CCTV footage appearing to cast doubt on Reagan Collis’ involvement in the Reiger Park shooting has been tampered with.

The Sport, Arts and Culture Minister dismissed claims that Collis is innocent, insisting that community intelligence he personally received implicates Collis and others in the attack.

The 23-year-old was arrested in connection with the murders on 7 August 2026, which left four people dead, including two members of the Anti-Gang Unit.

McKenzie claims video was tampered with

In one of his infamous live videos, McKenzie addressed the issue of CCTV footage which showed Collis at a house at the time of the shooting. His family claimed that the youngster was being framed, insisting that the footage showed he could not be responsible for the crime.

McKenzie pushed back against the narrative, claiming that the footage had been altered.

"Can't you see the video has been tampered with? There's only one way to see if a video has been tampered with: you look at the time," he said.

The Patriotic Alliance leader suggested that jumps in the footage's timestamp were evidence of manipulation. He was also about Collis' role in the murders.

"He didn't shoot the girls. He shot the cops. The other two — they caught one, and the other young man they're looking for. I know his name. He shot the girls," the minister claimed.

Netizens question McKenzie’s role

The video drew sharp reactions from South Africans who questioned McKenzie's involvement in what they considered a policing matter.

@OwamiNkosi17 questioned:

"Ain't he the Minister of Sports?"

Kenny Maulicio commented:

"But minister, it's not in your jurisdiction. How about you allow law enforcement to do their job?"

Unclee Polo raised further concerns:

"This guy is not a police officer. Why is he even involved in such matters? This time we realise he is still involved in crime. How did he see the original video and how does he know it's tampered with?"

Sello James added:

"We are waiting for VAR. Can you please focus on sports and give the police their own space?"
