EKURHULENI — The families of two women killed during a shooting in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni, are demanding answers weeks after the incident claimed their lives, with three suspects now facing charges in court.

According to SABC News, Jaydin Magerman, 27, and her friend Roleen Lessing were gunned down on 7 August 2026, just days after Magerman's birthday. Two members of the Anti-Gang Unit were also shot during the incident. Three suspects were subsequently arrested and have since appeared before the Boksburg Magistrates Court.

Families speak out on their loss

Magerman's mother, Collette Landsberg, described her anguish at not knowing what led to her daughter's death.

"What did you really do? And we don't come from a gangster background. So what could be your motive? So yes, I'm angry," she said.

Lessing's cousin, Sharney Blackway, echoed that confusion.

"As far as I am concerned and as far as I know, Roleen and Jaydin were innocent in this case. We don't understand why, and that is the frustrating part. It's frustrating because Roleen left behind her six-year-old son," Blackway said.

Calls for justice extend beyond the case

Beyond seeking accountability for the murders, the Lessing family expressed hope that the case would shine a light on broader criminal activity in the area. Blackway stated that the deaths had "exposed a lot of what is actually happening in Reiger Park," urging that those responsible for crime, including drug-related offences, be removed from the community.

Cause-of-death processes are still underway, and both families say they remain without closure as the case continues.
