SOUTH AFRICA - Home Affairs is reportedly conducting an internal investigation into Michael Adetshina, father of beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina, over concerns about how his South African permanent residence was obtained.

When approached for comment, the Department of Home Affairs did not confirm or deny the investigation. The department said only that where evidence of fraud or irregularity exists, it is legally obliged to investigate and take appropriate action.

Hawks roped into the probe

Previous reports indicated that the department brought in the Hawks due to suspicions around the individual recorded as having registered Chidimma's birth. Michael Adetshina's potential involvement stems from his role in that registration process, which is now under scrutiny.

The investigation carries serious consequences. If Michael Adetshina obtained his permanent residence through Anabela Rungo, who was arrested for allegedly stealing the identity of a woman named Sara Moyo, his residency status could be at risk of being revoked entirely.

The alleged victim in the identity theft case reportedly discovered the discrepancy in 2001 when she tried to register her newborn child. She alleged that her identity document had been issued from a location she had never visited, with records suggesting the irregularity dated back to 1995. Officials noted that records discussed in connection with the case referenced an infant registered under the name Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina.

Father speaks out in resurfaced audio

An audio recording of a man believed to be Chidimma's father has resurfaced on social media, in which he addressed questions about his family's connection to South Africa. In the recording, he described his children as Nigerian kids with full South African rights, clarifying that they hold dual citizenship.

Home Affairs uses Adetshina's passport as evidence

Previously, Briefly News reported that the Department of Home Affairs presented its case in the Cape Town Regional Court on Monday, citing Adetshina's Nigerian passport as evidence that she has a country to return to. State advocate Motlalepule Rantho argued Adetshina obtained Nigerian passports for herself and her child to advance her modelling career. Adetshina's lawyer countered that holding a passport does not establish national ties, with judgment reserved until 19 August.
