KWAZULU-NATAL — Disaster management teams across several southern KwaZulu-Natal municipalities have been placed on high alert after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms and damaging coastal winds. This was after SAWS issued 8 weather warnings for provinces for thunderstorms recently.

The warning covers multiple districts and forecasts heavy rainfall, strong gusty winds, hail, and excessive lightning throughout the day. Authorities have cautioned that conditions could lead to localised flooding, structural damage, and interruptions to power and municipal services.

Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs spokesperson Siboniso Mngadi confirmed that local emergency teams are actively monitoring developments across the affected areas. The municipalities identified for close observation include Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, uMuziwabantu, uMzumbe, uMzimkhulu, Johannes Phumani Phungula, and Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.

According to SABC News, Cooperative Governance MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi called on community members to remain alert as weather conditions deteriorate. He highlighted specific dangers associated with the storm system, including flash flooding along vulnerable roads, falling trees, and hazardous driving conditions.

Residents living in low-lying areas or in close proximity to rivers were advised to take extra precautions and follow updates from local authorities throughout the day.

Coastal areas and maritime operators warned

The storm system also poses significant risks along the coastline. High winds and rough seas are expected to cause disruptions near ports and harbours, and maritime authorities have warned small craft operators and other maritime users to stay off the water until conditions improve.

Emergency services across all named districts remain on standby, prepared to respond to incidents as the weather system moves through the province.
