25-Year-Old Woman Allegedly Killed During Midnight Altercation at Free State Farm

• A 25-year-old woman lost her life at Koksfontein Farm in Philippolis after an argument turned violent in the early hours of the morning
• Monica van Wyk and a 31-year-old suspect had spent the day together at a neighbouring farm before returning home and going to bed
• A midnight altercation left Monica with severe head wounds and bruises, and she died at the scene

FREE STATE - Monica van Wyk, 25, died at Koksfontein Farm in Philippolis, Free State, after she was allegedly attacked by a 31-year-old man in the early hours of Sunday, 20 September 2026.

Police were called to the scene at 14:00 that afternoon, where they pieced together what had happened in the hours before their arrival.

A day out that ended in tragedy

According to information received by police, Monica and the suspect had spent part of Sunday visiting the neighbouring farm, Driebad, where they socialised. The two later returned to Koksfontein Farm, where they were staying. An argument broke out between them, but it appeared to settle, and both went to bed.

Around midnight, the dispute reignited. Monica reportedly tried to leave the farm, but the suspect stopped her. He then allegedly struck her with an iron stick, hitting her on the body and on the head. She sustained three open wounds to her head and bruising across her upper body. Monica died at the scene before emergency services could reach her.

Suspect to appear in court

A 31-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with Monica's death. He is expected to appear before the Philippolis Magistrate's Court soon.

In similar news, a 37-year-old woman lost her life after her 44-year-old boyfriend allegedly attacked her with a hammer while she was on duty at the University of Limpopo campus in Polokwane. The victim, employed as a security guard at the university, was at her post at approximately 8:40pm on Saturday when the suspect arrived on campus and launched the brutal assault. According to police, the man struck her on the head with a hammer, leaving her critically injured.

Man arrested for the brutal murder of his girlfriend

Briefly News also reported that a man has been arrested for the brutal murder of his 26-year-old girlfriend, Mahlaku Malebo Rabalao. Rabalao was a young mom who worked as an IT specialist in Centurion, Pretoria. The man was aught in KwaZulu-Natal four months after the murder happened. Rabalao's body was found on 7 March in Midrand. Her lifeless body was set alight in her Mercedes Benz.
