SOUTH AFRICA — ANC MP Khusela Sangoni has come under fire after the party criticised suspended National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola over his handling of a directive issued by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
The backlash erupted on social media after the African National Congress (ANC) told Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee that Masemola failed to fulfil his constitutional responsibilities by not challenging Mchunu’s directive concerning Crime Intelligence appointments.
The committee is investigating allegations of criminality, corruption and political interference within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
ANC says Masemola should have challenged Mchunu
The ANC argued that Masemola, as the SAPS accounting officer, should have resisted what it regarded as an unlawful instruction from Mchunu.

The directive included a moratorium on filling Crime Intelligence vacancies and was also linked to the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT). Sangoni argued that Masemola should have known that the relevant authority rested with him and should have challenged the directive.
The submission has drawn criticism from the Activists and Citizens Forum, which accused Sangoni of shifting responsibility onto Masemola while protecting Mchunu.
The forum argued that Masemola was being blamed for complying with a directive he allegedly received from the suspended minister.
Sangoni responds to social media backlash
Taking to X, Sangoni said the ANC had made a finding against Masemola but had not recommended further action against him.
She also said the ANC had not referred Masemola for further investigation, unlike Mchunu and others.
Sangoni added that the party had acknowledged a lapse on Masemola's part but said its submission did not state that he should be prevented from returning to work.
The clarification came after social media users accused the ANC of targeting Masemola while protecting Mchunu.

Masemola contradicts Mchunu on PKTT directive
Previously, Briefly News reported that Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola contradicted Senzo Mchunu by claiming that President Cyril Ramaphosa seemed surprised by the disbanding of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).Mchunu, the Minister of Police, who is currently on special leave, authorised the disbandment of the PKTT on 31 December 2024. During his return to the Ad Hoc Committee on 17 March 2025, General Masemola said that he was never told about Senzo Mchunu's order to disband the PKTT.
