Public Protector Confirms Investigation Into Police Minister Senzo Mchunu Is at an Advanced Stage

GAUTENG — The Public Protector has confirmed that its investigation into Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, under the Executive Members' Ethics Act, is at an advanced stage.

The Public Protector's probe was initiated on 10 July 2025, after a complaint lodged by African Transformation Movement leader Vuyo Zungula. Zungula's complaint followed allegations made publicly by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on 6 July 2025.

Chief Operating Officer Advocate Nelisiwe Nkabinde made the disclosure about Mchunu's investigation on Thursday, 1 October 2026, during the release of the office's quarter two investigation findings by Public Protector advocate Kholeka Gcaleka.

The probe is nearing completion

Addressing the progress, Advocate Nkabinde said that additional evidence continues to surface as the probe draws closer to completion.

"We are at a very advanced stage, and the nature of such investigations is that, as you think we are now closing, there is more information that becomes available.
"We are following up on that information as we edge closer to the end of the investigation," Advocate Nkabinde said.

She also confirmed that the office had received full co-operation from all parties consulted, including General Mkhwanazi. Advocate Nkabinde said the co-operation had resulted in the office obtaining additional information and evidence throughout the consultation process.

Imogen Mashazi probed by Public Protector

In a separate set of quarter two findings, the Public Protector determined that former Ekurhuleni City Manager Imogen Mashazi acted improperly when she appointed Ndumiso Gcwabe as Deputy Chief of Metro Police for Security and Loss Control.

Gcwabe lacked the required NQF level 7 qualification, holding only an NQF level 6 National Diploma in Policing and short certificates that did not meet the advertised criteria.

Senzo Mchunu's home raided

Briefly News also reported that Senzo Mchunu's spokesperson confirmed that a search and seizure operation was conducted at the minister's home.

Mchunu's spokesperson, Sthembiso Mshengu, confirmed the operation in a statement released on 22 September 2026.

Officials arrived at his home armed with a search and seizure warrant issued by the Johannesburg High Court.
