GAUTENG — Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni says specialised units have been deployed to advance the investigation into 12 cases involving women's bodies discovered across Ekurhuleni, with nine matters still unresolved.

According to SABC News, Mthombeni confirmed on 2 October 2026 that three of the cases have been closed, while investigators are actively pursuing persons of interest identified in three additional cases linked to Kempton Park. Three of the deceased remain unidentified, and police are working to establish their identities through forensic means.

Multidisciplinary team assembled

To strengthen the investigation, the South African Police Service has put together a specialised multidisciplinary unit comprising senior detectives, forensic science experts, and an investigative psychologist. The psychologist's role centres on offender profiling, which investigators hope will help narrow down suspects across the open dockets.

Mthombeni said DNA matching and forensic analysis are central to the current phase of the investigation, both to identify the unidentified victims and to link potential suspects to crime scenes. He stressed that the scientific approach is being supported by dedicated field resources to ensure thoroughness.

R400 000 reward still available

A R400 000 reward remains available to any member of the public who provides information that directly leads to the arrest and successful conviction of those responsible. Authorities have urged residents in the Ekurhuleni area, particularly those with missing relatives, to contact police as soon as possible.

The reward reflects the urgency with which investigators are treating the matter, as the multidisciplinary team works to resolve the remaining cases and bring those responsible to justice.
