Murder-accused former club cricketer Tristan Perez is set to appear at the Wynberg Regional Court on 22 September 2026, marking the formal start of the trial process in the case surrounding the death of his girlfriend, Elana Brooke.

Brooke, aged 46, died on 23 March in Heathfield, Cape Town, in circumstances that led to Perez's arrest on suspicion of murder. Perez was subsequently released on bail and has made several court appearances as the case has worked its way through the legal system.
Case moves to Regional Court
The State had previously requested additional time to finalise its investigation, and the matter was postponed accordingly after Perez's last appearance in June at the Wynberg Magistrates' Court. That investigation has now been concluded, and the case is advancing to the next stage of proceedings.

David Brooke, Elana's ex-husband and family spokesperson, confirmed the September court date and welcomed the development as a meaningful step forward.
"In simple terms, the matter is now moving from the Magistrates Court on the second floor to the Regional Court on the fourth floor, which is another positive and important step forward," David Brooke said.
He added that procedural steps between the State prosecution and the defence would take place before the September appearance.
"We continue to trust the process and take confidence from the information that has been communicated to us by the State prosecution. For now, we await the next court date and continue doing whatever we can to support the process and fight for justice for Elana," he said.

Perez claimed Brooke died by suicide
Police arrested Perez in March after suspecting him of killing Brooke following what was believed to be a heated argument. Investigators were granted permission to examine his phone, on which they reportedly found a recording of an escalating altercation. Perez told officers that Brooke had taken her own life. She was 46 years old.
Perez was subsequently released on R5 000 bail, a decision that drew outrage from Brooke's family and representatives, who publicly condemned the amount as grossly inadequate.
Perez had been a prominent figure in Cape Town's club cricket scene for several years. His membership at Claremont Cricket Club was terminated in mid-February, before his arrest, over conduct the club described as incompatible with its values. Club records show that just before his arrest, Perez had scored 237 runs off 113 balls for the club's second XI, a reported double-century record.
