South African motorsport has been plunged into mourning after the fatal shooting of racing driver Robert Wolk in Kempton Park on the evening of Wednesday, 16 September 2026. Wolk, who was 41 years old, had been preparing to fly to Cape Town to compete in a racing event when he was killed.

The South African Police Service confirmed that the incident occurred on the corner of Camwood Street and Portland Drive in Esther Park. Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the shooting followed a road-rage altercation and that Wolk was declared dead at the scene. An Audi vehicle, believed to have belonged to Wolk, was found nearby. No arrests have been made, and a murder case has been opened.
What witnesses saw in Esther Park
Witnesses on the scene indicated that Wolk's Audi had made low-speed contact with a Volkswagen Jetta. When Wolk got out of his vehicle to inspect the damage, a confrontation erupted with the other driver.

A video that has since gone viral on social media shows Wolk appealing to the other driver not to shoot him. The other driver nonetheless produced a firearm and shot Wolk in the back as he turned to walk away, in full view of onlookers who scrambled for cover. The footage then shows the shooter picking up an object from the ground before fleeing.
Colonel Nevhuhulwi stated that the motive is still under investigation.
Motorsport South Africa pays tribute
Wolk's career in South African motorsport spanned nearly three decades and covered karting, single-seaters, touring cars and circuit racing. His titles included multiple Formula Ford championships, the SA Formula Volkswagen crown in 2013, the Formula 1600 title in 2015, and back-to-back SA GTC championships in 2021 and 2022.
Wolk added another major achievement to his decorated career in 2024 when he won the SA Touring Cars championship. In May 2026, he secured his second King of the Hill victory at the prestigious Simola Hillclimb.
Motorsport South Africa paid tribute to Wolk, describing him as one of the most respected figures in the local racing scene. The organisation highlighted a career that stretched across almost 30 years and included success in karting, single-seaters, touring cars and circuit racing.
Motosport South Africa said his death had left a significant void in the sport, while remembering him for more than his list of championships. Wolk was also praised for the passion, dedication and sportsmanship he displayed throughout his career.
The organisation added that Wolk had remained active at national level right up to his death and had been due to compete at Killarney that weekend.
Tributes have continued to pour in from fellow drivers, teams and fans paying respect to a driver remembered for his professionalism and humility.
