Cycling body calls for tougher road laws

The Pedal Power Association responded to the incident, with spokesperson Neil Robinson noting that six cyclists have lost their lives on Western Cape roads over the past 10 months. He said the association did not yet know the full circumstances of this particular death but intended to follow up with SAPS, and extended condolences to the victim's family.

Robinson was pointed in his criticism of the current legal framework governing road offences. He argued that existing laws are too lenient on those who disregard road rules, and that sentences handed down rarely serve as a meaningful deterrent.

While he acknowledged that prosecutors nationwide are competent, he said they are overwhelmed and under-resourced, with court backlogs compounding the suffering of victims' families.

He also called for greater motorist education around cyclists' legal right to use public roads, and urged SAPS to maintain a more visible presence. Robinson expressed concern that police are not following proper procedures and said the service requires better resourcing to do so effectively.
