According to Metro Sport, Man United players prefer Ten Hag's assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy to take the role if his compatriot is fired.
The former Red Devils striker arrived at the club in the summer and has served as PSV manager before.
He opened up on his return, adding that he wanted to be a coach.
"I felt a strong feeling I want to help build United, little by little, to where we feel and know the club should be. I know, I was on a managerial track," he said. "I was at PSV, it was an unbelievable experience, via Manchester Evening News.
Van Nistelrooy scored 150 goals for the 20-time English champions and won one Premier League title.
He could be thrown on the hot seat if Erik ten Hag leaves in the coming weeks.
Coaches who could replace Erik ten Hag
Briefly News earlier listed four coaches who could replace Erik ten Hag if Man United decides to fire him.
First-team coach Ruud van Nistelrooy is the leading candidate alongside former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, who is jobless.
The Red Devils have had a difficult start to the season, and their draw at home to FC Twente in the Europa League raised more questions about the manager. The former Ajax coach was on the brink last season, but the FA Cup bought him some time.
