As an interim coach, he won three games and drew once, giving the team much-needed momentum and confidence-boosting wins.
His short-lived stint drew praise from fans who gave him an emotional send-off after the 3-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday.
Van Nistelrooy reiterated that he was open to helping the club in any capacity, but Amorim's decision to bring his staff resulted in his depature.
Ferdinand questions Amorim's decision
Rio Ferdinand was impressed with van Nistelrooy's stint as interim manager, adding that players genuinely liked the Dutchman.
“The players had grown to really like him, they appreciated how he informed them of different bits and pieces – tactically, individually, as a team – and there was a genuine ‘we want to do well for this guy’," Ferdinand said via The Mirror.
The legendary defender highlighted what his exit could mean for the players and fans.
“We’ve been sitting here waiting for a manager to connect with the players. We have one right now. Why are you going to get rid of him?"
After his brief spell at his former club, the former Real Madrid striker will now be looking for head coach positions.
