5 Longest Serving Coaches in the Premier League After Pep Guardiola’s Man City Extension
- Pep Guardiola has extended his contract with Manchester City and remains the longest-serving Premier League manager
- Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes are the two longest-serving coaches in the English top flight
- Longevity for coaches in the Premier League is challenging since clubs are ready to fire a coach when results are not there
At the top level of European football clubs change coaches often.
Pressure is always on those in charge to deliver consistent results, and teams are not afraid to pull the trigger when things go downhill.
Pep Guardiola has extended his contract with Manchester City for one year and remains one of the longest-serving coaches in the Premier League.
Gone are the days when a coach like Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes could stay at one club for over a decade.
With the Premier League raking in hefty revenue, teams are determined to stay in the English top flight. Dropping to the second tier could mean fighting for survival or risking being consigned to oblivion.
Guardiola is the longest-serving coach in the league. He has led Man City to six Premier League titles and could win more if he lasts longer. Here are the five longest-serving coaches currently in the Premier League.
Longest serving coaches in Premier League
5. Eddie Howe (2021-)
Howe miraculously took Bournemouth to the Premier League in 2015 and helped establish them in the top flight before their relegation in 2020. Newcastle United came calling in 2020 after the takeover by a Saudi-led consortium.
He took charge when the Magpies were 19th in the table and led them to safety. In his first full season, Newcastle finished fourth. In 2022, he signed a new long-term contract at St James' Park.
4. Marco Silva (2021-)
The Fulham boss has done an incredible job at Fulham. The Cottagers were relegated in the 2020/21 season and immediately hired Silva. He helped them win promotion the following season, then finished a respectable 10th in the English top flight.
Silva had previously coached Hull City, Watford and Everton, places he struggled. This season, the London-based teams sit seventh after 11 games. Last year, Fulham handed him a new contract until the end of the 2025/26 season.
3. Mikel Arteta (2019-)
The former Guardiola disciple had done exceptional work at Arsenal. He was appointed in December 2019 after Unai Emery's sacking. The first two seasons were not great, as the Gunners finished eighth in both campaigns (2020 &2021).
The following season, the Gunners finished fifth before back-to-back second-place finishes. Last term, they narrowly missed out on the league title. It is fair to say Arteta will stay at the Emirates longer after signing a three-year extension in September.
2. Thomas Frank (2018-)
Frank has established Brentford in the Premier League since they were promoted in 2021. The Bees are in their fourth straight season in the English top flight and have started this season impressively.
Frank signed a 5-year deal in December 2022, which means he is at Brentfron for the long term.
1. Pep Guardiola (2016-)
Manchester City hired Guardiola in July 2016, and it has been a success. The Spaniard has coached 490 matches with the club and won 18 trophies, including six Premier League crowns. Only Sir Alex Ferguson has won more (13). The former Barcelona boss has never finished below third in the Premier League.
He led the club to their first Champions League crown last year, making Man City the second English club to win a treble after their bitter rivals Man United. He has signed a one-year deal until 2026.
Manchester United's Ruben Amorim is the newest coach in the league. He coaches his first match this weekend.
Guardiola on Premier League title
Briefly News earlier reported that Guardiola appeared to concede the 2024/25 Premier League title after Man City's loss to Brighton.
The former Bayern Munich tactician suggested that another team might deserve to win the title, hinting that Liverpool could be the winner come May 2025.
