Dominic Solanke opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Dejan Kulusevski added a second early in the second half. Solanke then turned Lisandro Martinez inside out to make it three in the 54th minute, per Sky Sports.
However, Spurs goalkeeper Fraser Forster's errors allowed Man United to score twice through Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo.
Man United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir's howler allowed Heung-Min Son to score directly from a corner to give Spurs a 4-2 lead. Jonny Evans' header in added time wasn't enough as they exited the competition.
FA investigation in Spurs vs Man Utd
After Bayindir conceded a corner in the 89th minute, Man United players were livid after they felt the goalkeeper was fouled. They ran to the referee, John Brooks, to make their case.
The goalkeeper and his captain, Bruno Fernandes, received yellow cards after their protests.
As quoted by Sportbible, a former PGMOL official said there will be an investigation into what transpired after Son's goal.
“Bayindir had already complained to referee John Brooks that he was fouled by Lucas Bergvall," he said.
The United skipper may have had a point but despite there being a big screen – there is no official use of VAR available.
“I have no doubt that this will be investigated by the league and the Football Association disciplinary panel.”
