Premier Soccer League supporters will have to dig deeper into their pockets this season after several clubs increased ticket prices, with Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA) arguing the hikes are necessary to keep hosting matches financially sustainable.
Speaking on Friday, 7 August, SMSA chief executive Bertie Grobbelaar said the biggest challenge facing clubs is the growing cost of staging games, particularly at major venues.
Orlando Pirates have increased standard tickets from R60 to R100, while Kaizer Chiefs have raised theirs from R60 to R80.
Security costs drive ticket price increases
Speaking to journalists at FNB Stadium before Chiefs' MTN8 quarter-final against Golden Arrows, Grobbelaar said safety and security costs have become one of the biggest matchday expenses.

SABC Sport reports that according to Grobbelaar, hosting a fixture attended by about 19,000 supporters at FNB Stadium requires roughly R400,000 for security alone.
He said that figure excludes other operational costs such as lighting, medical services, fencing and additional staff, making it increasingly difficult for clubs to rely on lower ticket prices.

SMSA urges balance between fans and sustainability
While acknowledging the financial pressure facing many supporters, Grobbelaar said clubs also need enough revenue to remain commercially viable.
"There must be a middle ground," he said, adding that demand for high-profile fixtures, including Soweto derbies that regularly sell out quickly, also plays a role in determining ticket prices.
As the 2026/27 season gets underway, the debate over affordability versus sustainability is likely to remain a talking point among South African football supporters.

Briefly News also reported that former PSL striker Devon Saal made an emotional appeal to clubs after revealing he has struggled to secure even a trial ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The ex-Maritzburg United forward claimed some coaches end conversations as soon as they hear his name, leaving him wondering whether he has been unfairly written off. Saal insisted he is willing to play for performance bonuses if it gives him the opportunity to prove himself again.
