Pitso Mosimane has invoked Carlo Ancelotti and his son Davide while explaining one of the biggest changes to his Bafana Bafana technical team.
Mosimane was unveiled as the new Bafana Bafana coach at SAFA House on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, signing a four-year contract. He has chosen Musi Matlaba and Kabelo Rangoaga as assistants, while Helman Mkhalele, who worked under Hugo Broos, has not been retained.

Asked about Mkhalele’s omission, Mosimane turned to Ancelotti, using the relationship between the Italian coach and Davide as his main example.

“Everyone and every coach has his own technical team, right? And I’ll tell you about [Italian coach Carlo] Ancelotti. You know who he takes with him?
“He takes his son. And they have won a lot of trophies,” Mosimane said.
He continued:
“If I had my son next to me here in SA instead, I think you would be saying some other things.”
Mosimane then explained what he believed mattered most.
“And the world is not looking at Ancelotti and his son, right? It’s looking at the work to be done,” he said.

Mosimane backs his trusted team
Mosimane said his own choices were similarly based on previous work and understanding.
“So, for us, it’s the work done,” he said. “I have people that have done the FIFA Club World Cup with me here. Four of them.”
He added:
“It’s the people who understand the way I work, the way we work.”
Mosimane acknowledged the progress made under Broos and said he intends to build on that foundation with his own technical structure.
