Sandile Zungu has promised action against those responsible for Bafana Bafana’s unpaid 2026 FIFA World Cup bonuses if he becomes SAFA president.
Speaking on Monday, 7 September 2026, Zungu said the money owed to players and technical staff must be paid by close of business on Thursday.
“If it is not, the people responsible for that injustice will account when I move into office as the president of SAFA. They should consider themselves fired,” Zungu said, as reported by SABC News.
His comments came after SAFA explained that the delay was linked to international tax compliance requirements in the United States and Mexico. The association said specialist advisers had been appointed to handle the process and that the outstanding payments specifically relate to World Cup bonuses.

SAFA explains World Cup bonus delay
SAFA said it had obtained an Employer Identification Number from the US Internal Revenue Service while specialists finalised tax calculations and documentation. The association confirmed that allowances, fees and other payments had been settled, with the World Cup bonuses still outstanding.
Reports put SAFA’s FIFA World Cup receipt at R218 million (approximately US$13.64 million), with R65 million (approximately US$4.07 million) allocated to the players’ bonus pool.

Zungu heads into SAFA election
Zungu will challenge incumbent Danny Jordaan at the SAFA elective congress on Saturday, 12 September. He has also criticised the association’s handling of VAR and called for faster implementation of the technology.
The bonus dispute has therefore become another major issue in the final days before the leadership vote.
SAFA says the payment process is progressing, while Zungu has made the outstanding bonuses a key test of accountability ahead of Saturday’s election.
AmaZulu King backs Sandile Zungu in SAFA election
Briefly News previously reported that Sandile Zungu has received the backing of AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini ahead of his SAFA presidential battle with incumbent Danny Jordaan.
The King has called on all 11 KwaZulu-Natal SAFA regions to support Zungu, with the royal chancellor saying the aim was to secure “maximum support” for the candidate in his home province.
