Orlando Pirates Legend Advises Bafana Bafana Star to Choose Kaizer Chiefs Over Buccaneers

  • Former Orlando Pirates winger Lebohang 'Cheeseboy' Mokoena weighed in on Brooklyn Poggenpoel's potential club move
  • The Premier Soccer League midfielder impressed on his Bafana Bafana debut and has attracted attention from PSL clubs
  • Mokoena raised concerns about the Bafana Bafana midfielder's chances of getting regular game time at Orlando Pirates

Former Orlando Pirates winger Lebohang "Cheeseboy" Mokoena has come out in favour of Brooklyn Poggenpoel joining Kaizer Chiefs, should the 27-year-old midfielder decide to leave Durban City.

Speaking on Soccerbeat, Mokoena pointed to Poggenpoel's Bafana Bafana debut as evidence of a player ready to compete at the highest domestic level, and argued that Chiefs would offer him a more realistic path to regular first-team football.

Why Mokoena rates Poggenpoel

Mokoena said he had identified Poggenpoel as one to watch even before his senior international breakthrough, praising the midfielder's development through the academy system.

"I spoke about him once he made the preliminary squad that he is one player for the future, and this is what I like about Poggenpoel, he was well developed. We rarely find players who came through the academies and make it all the way to the senior team," Mokoena said.

He was equally complimentary of the performance Poggenpoel delivered after coming on as a substitute for Bathusi Aubaas during the Bafana match.

"His performance for Bafana when he replaced Aubaas showed Pitso that he's here to stay. He is really aggressive in the midfield, he reminds me of his brother."

Mokoena questions Poggenpoel's prospects at Pirates

Despite his own history with Orlando Pirates, Mokoena was direct about the challenges Poggenpoel would face at the club, citing a crowded midfield as a significant obstacle to playing time.

"At Pirates, you look at a lot of players like Makhaula, Selepe, there's Dansin and some of them are not getting regular game time. If he goes to Pirates, what are the chances of him playing?"

He drew a clear contrast with the situation at Kaizer Chiefs, where he believes Poggenpoel could step straight into contention for a starting role.

"At Chiefs, Kaizer Chiefs is a team under construction, and they are still trying to find a winning combination. I will take Poggenpoel to Chiefs because he is able to play. He can participate in the build-up as he is technically gifted. He is much better than Mthethwa in terms of technical ability; he won't just lose the ball."
