A Welsh rugby player has died following an alleged assault by a security guard at a bar while holidaying in Turkey, an inquest opening has heard.
Scot James, 34, from Maesteg, passed away at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant on 26 July. The brief inquest opening, held at Pontypridd Coroner's Court on Tuesday, revealed that the incident took place in the early hours of 5 July at a resort in Turkey.
What happened to Scot James in Turkey
According to the inquest, a verbal exchange between James and a security guard escalated when the guard struck him once, causing him to fall and sustain serious head injuries. He was subsequently hospitalised in Turkey before being repatriated to the United Kingdom, where he later died despite medical intervention at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.
A post-mortem examination was conducted by Dr Stephen Leadbeatter at the University Hospital of Wales on 3 August. A provisional cause of death was recorded as blunt head injury, including a left temporal parietal fracture and right inferior cerebral contusion, pending histology results.

Area coroner Rachel Knight confirmed she had opened a full inquest, stating she was satisfied there was reason to suspect James' death may have been unnatural. She said Turkish police are potentially investigating the matter with assistance from the Foreign Office, and that a mention hearing would be scheduled in four months to receive an update.
Knight added that inquest proceedings may need to be paused pending the outcome of any criminal proceedings, and that the court would liaise with Turkish authorities.
Tributes pour in for Maesteg Celtic RFC player
James played for Maesteg Celtic RFC, whose statement described him as "an outstanding player and a great character and friend by everyone who had the pleasure of sharing the field with him."
His family issued a tribute through South Wales Police, remembering him as "a devoted son, grandson, brother, partner, father, uncle and friend, whose kindness and loyalty touched countless lives." They added: "No words can truly express the pain we are experiencing or the void his passing has left in our lives."
The family appealed for privacy as they grieve and asked that those who cared for James during his ordeal receive their sincere thanks.
