Rassie Erasmus Breaks Silence on Claims That Springboks’ Baltimore Test Is an ‘Exhibition’

Rassie Erasmus has rejected suggestions that the Springboks’ fourth Test against New Zealand in Baltimore is merely an exhibition match, insisting both sides remain fully motivated to win the series.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, Erasmus said the match location did not change its significance. The Springboks lead the Four-Test series 2-1 heading into Saturday’s clash.

“I don’t want to appear arrogant, but New Zealand will have the same stance – they’ll give everything to win the match and share the trophy,” Erasmus said as reported by Rugby365.

“Both teams will be equally motivated. I don’t agree that the series finished in South Africa and this is just an extra Test match.”

Springboks and All Blacks still have everything to play for

Erasmus also addressed what would happen should New Zealand level the series in Baltimore. He explained that the possibility of a 2-2 draw had been discussed well before the teams travelled to the United States.

“We knew from the outset that the fourth Test will take place in Baltimore,” he said.

The teams agreed that the trophy would be shared if New Zealand wins to level the series.

“We’re preparing to win just as New Zealand does. If they win, we’re level [2-2],” Erasmus added.

Baltimore Test could decide the series

Erasmus believes the stakes are therefore clear for both sides.

“Then neither of us would’ve achieved anything – it’s a huge game for us and New Zealand would view it the same way as well,” he said.

The Springboks face the All Blacks on Saturday, 12 September, in Baltimore.
