The figure was confirmed by IOL when Esterhuizen joined Harlequins from the Sharks in January 2020, with then-Sharks CEO Eduard Coetzee confirming the move. News24 reported the same figure, calculating the rand equivalent at approximately R6.4 million per year at the January 2020 exchange rate.

Esterhuizen's Harlequins Earnings

By May 2022, IOL reported that Esterhuizen remained on £340,000 a year at Harlequins, with the rand equivalent rising to roughly R6.7 million due to exchange rate movement. The publication described him as one of the Premiership's best-paid players at the time.

Across four seasons in England on that contract, Esterhuizen's reported gross earnings from Harlequins amounted to approximately £1.36 million before taxes and deductions.

His time at the club also produced silverware as he won the 2021 Premiership title with Harlequins before returning to Durban in 2024.

Back at the Sharks and Captaining the Springboks

Since rejoining the Sharks, the 1.94m, 122kg midfielder has become central to the franchise's plans. The club has committed to him until June 2030. He also received the Sharks' Players' Player of the Year award for the previous campaign.

His role has expanded on the international stage as well. Esterhuizen made his Springbok debut in 2018 and was part of South Africa's 2023 Rugby World Cup-winning squad. In September 2026, he was named to captain the Springboks against Australia in Perth, becoming South Africa's 68th Test captain.

The financial terms of his current Sharks contract have not been made public, meaning the £340,000 Harlequins salary remains the most clearly documented figure from his professional career. People AI estimates his 2026 net worth at approximately US$1.41 million, an estimate rather than a disclosed valuation.
