MALAWI —Authorities in Lilongwe have taken 32-year-old Blessings Mbalangwe into custody after he allegedly fled with a South African visitor’s vehicle during a spiritual pilgrimage.
The incident reportedly occurred while Mbalangwe and South African citizen Nkosinathi Mathebula were staying at a guest house in the Kaphiri area. The duo had crossed the border from South Africa to seek traditional healing services from a local religious leader for Mathebula's ailing nephew. According to Sub-Inspector Foster Benjamin, spokesperson for the Central West Region Police, Mbalangwe took the keys to Mathebula's Gauteng-registered Nissan Navara Double Cab (KD 14 XN GP) while the owner was sleeping, then vanished with the truck toward Dowa district.
Alert residents in Nyemba village, situated within the Traditional Authority Msakambewa area, noticed the vehicle and alerted law enforcement. Acting on the community tip, Dowa police investigators tracked the double-cab pickup to Mbalangwe’s ancestral home, where it was impounded and transferred to the specialized Lilongwe Anti-Motor Vehicle Theft Squad. Police subsequently located and detained Mbalangwe in Lilongwe. He faces formal charges of grand auto theft and is scheduled to answer to the allegations at the Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court.
