KYIV - The new year has begun with renewed fighting in the Russia-Ukraine war as Russia launched numerous rocket fires on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv.
In a statement, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Russia launched dozens of attack drones, cruise and aerial ballistic missiles at Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Kropyvnytskyi and other settlements.
Ukraine said the attack on the country's capital left destroyed residential buildings, a warehouse, a supermarket, and gas infrastructure.
They added that some parts of the capital have been cut off from the electricity and water supply lines.
"As of this morning, 92 people have been reported injured and 4 killed. As search and rescue operations continue, the number of victims may increase," the ministry reported.
What is Ukraine's appeal to international community
The country's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, called on foreign states to respond decisively to the latest attacks.
They have called for the supply of additional air defence systems, combat drones of all types, and long-range missiles to Ukraine.
Kuleba also asked for the transfer of frozen Russian assets for the needs of Ukraine and terminating contacts with Russian diplomats in the respective capitals and international organisations.
"The terrorist regime in Moscow must feel that the international community will not turn a blind eye to the killing of Ukrainian civilians and the destruction of Ukraine’s critical infrastructure," he said.
US to target banks that help Russia
Briefly New previously reported that the United States announced its intention to impose sanctions on foreign banks aiding Russia's actions in the Ukraine conflict, aiming to apply economic leverage on Moscow.
Through an executive order, the U.S. gained the authority to impose secondary sanctions on financial institutions supporting Russia's defense industry, as per officials.
There was an expressed expectation that European and U.S. banks, even if not directly involved with Russia, would influence their partners engaged in operations within the country.
