Condolences have poured in from Proverb’s fans and from those who knew the woman as a lecturer, friend and colleague.

Briefly.co.za gathered that Proverb’s mom, Dr Nomonde Thekisho worked as a lecturer at the University of North West in Mahikeng. Colleagues and students described her as a motherly figure whose loss will be deeply felt.

Proverb paid tribute to his mom by tweeting: “Bad things will always happen; how I respond to them defines my character & the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain & treasure the most precious gift I have - life itself.”

A week before his mom passed, Proverb released a song entitled Heaven, which paid tribute to some of South Africa’s fallen icons.

In the song, the rapper pays tribute to a number of people, including Winnie-Madikizela Mandela, Nelson Mandela, Steven Hawking, Hugh Masekela and others.

The song describes Proverb’s vision of what heaven looks like.
