Minister of Justice and Correctional service Ronald Lamola announced that the matric inmate pass rate for the year 2020 increased to 86.3% for full-time students. Lamola noted that this was higher than the national pass rate which sat at 76.2%.

The matric inmates achieved a massive 76 distinctions and 78 bachelor passes. The pass rate is a big increase for the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) as there was an 82.6% pass rate in 2019.

The global pandemic affected the class of 2020 badly, with the constant closing and reopening of schools, however, Lamola stated that the Covid-19 pandemic had also affected the inmates' teaching and learning.
