EASTERN CAPE — Volkswagen Group Africa unveiled its new Tengo SUV at the Volkswagen Plant in Kariega, Nelson Mandela Bay, during the company's 75th Anniversary Gala Dinner on 31 August 2026.
The Tengo is a compact crossover positioned below the T-Cross in terms of price, designed to offer a more affordable entry point into the SUV segment. Production at the Kariega plant is scheduled to begin in 2027, making it the third model assembled at the facility alongside the Polo and Polo Vivo. The vehicle will also be exported to other parts of Africa.
R4 billion investment in South African manufacturing
The launch is underpinned by a R4 billion investment in local manufacturing capacity. Volkswagen confirmed the Tengo will be offered in three variants, with features including an infotainment display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a wireless smartphone charger with a cooling function.

President Ramaphosa attends the gala
President Cyril Ramaphosa attended the gala dinner and addressed the significance of the announcement for South Africa's industrial ambitions. He described the investment as a vote of confidence in South African workers, the country's manufacturing capability, and its standing as an investment destination.
Ramaphosa said the Tengo's production aligned with the government's broader economic agenda, noting that it "resonates with our quest to further industrialise" and to build factories that produce goods domestically.

Government commits to policy stability for automotive sector
The President also addressed concerns from the automotive industry about the operating environment, saying the government had heard their appeal.
"Government is working to ensure that there is a stable, predictable, supportive policy environment in which the automotive companies can invest, can localise, and grow," he said.
The Kariega plant, situated near Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, has been central to Volkswagen's South African operations for decades. The addition of the Tengo to its production line represents one of the most significant expansions the facility has seen in recent years, with the R4 billion commitment expected to support jobs and local supplier networks in the region.
VW celebrated 20 years local production
Previously, Briefly News reported that VW South Africa unveiled the Polo GTI Edition 20, a special anniversary model celebrating 20 years of local GTI production.Top Auto reported that the milestone forms part of a bigger celebration in 2026, as VW marks 30 years of Polo production at Plant Kariega. The Polo has been built there since 1996, in the Eastern Cape, with the high-performance GTI version assembled locally for the past two decades.
