Hilton College Partners With SGU to Open New Medical School Path for SA Students

Getting into medical school in South Africa is one of the most competitive academic pursuits in the country. Now, a KwaZulu-Natal school is offering students a way around the bottleneck.

Hilton College has signed an academic affiliation agreement with St George's University (SGU) School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. The partnership creates a formal international pathway for qualifying Hilton College school leavers who want to become doctors but cannot secure one of the limited local places.

SA's medical school crisis

The numbers tell a stark story. According to a report, the University of KwaZulu-Natal receives roughly 12,000 applications each year for approximately 250 first-year MBChB spots. At the University of the Witwatersrand, medicine is the most heavily applied-for degree on campus, with thousands of students competing for a similarly small number of places. South Africa has only 10 public medical schools in total, making the odds deeply discouraging for even the most academically capable students.

What the SGU pathway offers

Under the new arrangement, eligible Hilton College graduates who meet SGU's entry requirements can apply directly for a five-year Doctor of Medicine degree. Students can complete their foundational medical sciences either at SGU's main campus in Grenada or at Northumbria University in Newcastle, United Kingdom. Clinical rotations then take place across a global network of more than 75 affiliated teaching hospitals and health centres in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Hilton College applicants also receive dedicated admissions counselling, guaranteed interview slots, and access to partial merit-based scholarships, giving them a meaningful head start in the application process.

Critically, the pathway is designed with South Africa in mind. SGU holds official recognition from the Health Professions Council of South Africa, which means graduates can apply to register locally and practise medicine at home, provided they meet the standard statutory requirements.
